GHIYATHU’D-DIN TUGHLUQ’S Tomb

This is a self built tomb with a mausoleum enclosed within high battered pentagonal stone walls, ,strengthened with bastions and looks like a small fortress. Initially it was surrounded by an artificial lake fed by the overflowing water of natural channels. It was connected with the Tughluqabad Fort by a path of stone which is presently intersected by the main road.
This monument was built during around AD 1322-1325 and still can challenge many monuments of India as far as architectural work is concern.

Turkman Gate used to be the southern gate of the old walled city, Shahjahanabad. This southern gate was named after the devout Muslim saint, Hazrat Shah Turkman Bayabani. Turkman Gate was built during the period of 1650s. This is situated in the densely populated old Delhi near Ramlila Ground and next to Ram Sita Market. Like the other gates of Shahjahanabad, Turkman Gate is square in plan and having high arched openings. This gate is not well known among travelers and rather infamous for demolition and firing case happened during Emergency in India (1976). Many people lost their limbs and lives due to police firing during an agitation against demolitions of their houses near to Turkman Gate.

It is almost one year I am here in photo blog. As of now I am using compact camera, fuji finepix J120, and planning to get a DSLR to have a taste of more serious photography.

there are many brands in the market with many features out of which mostly i dont understand.

Request you all to suggest a camera+lense so that I can capture decent macro subject as well as fast moving object like flying bird.

In my path, near Chhatarpur Metro station the incredible India, once more, forced me to take my camera out of bag… An Indian elephant is waiting for green signal at a crossing... It was July last year... I was there at my home town, Kolkata (Calcutta).
During a nice rainy evening I took shelter at front gate of M.P. Birla Planetarium. It was a real nice experience of being tapped there in the mystical rays coming out of the hanging light...It was amazing.

I found no suitable name for this pic...so it is simply No Name.... What can be more mystical than having no name?

Rainy day and a story of exploration....

Last weekend was quite rainy forcing me to remain indoor for two consecutive days... soon chatting and story books proved ill-equipped to kill time and I started staring at bathing nature with some romantic thought (may be :P)... then suddenly I found three calves in our abandoned front gate....as the gate was open (thanks to the person who kept it open) three of them entered one by one and gave strange look at everything around ...soon their inquisitive mind forced them to explore the place and one of them started with a plant nearby and then one another....But the third one started with our iron gate... all together it was a lovely show.

Chittaranjan Park or C R Park, named after Bengali freedom fighter and lawyer Chittaranjan Das, is a one stop center for Bengali culture at Delhi. It is situated near Nehru Place at south of New Delhi. The above picture is the front door of the main chember of the Kali temple you will find here in C R Park. This temple is well know as CR PARK KALI BARI. Worshiping of goddess Kali (photo below) as mother is an unique part of Bengali culture.

there are three chamber in the temple or Kali bari. the main chamber is of the Kali Maa while in left and right there are two more chamber for lord Shiva and Radha Krishna respectively.

The above photograph is of the chamber of the god of love, Krishna with Radha.

The left chamber is of lord Shiva and you hardly can miss the great statue of the Bull out side of the Shiva temple.

the temple is highly decorated with clay works. these clay works of the C R Park Kali bari is famous as the touch of ancient bengali art is almost intact in these decoration. The Architecture of the C R Park Kalibari temple is again a replica of the clay made temples created during Pal and Sen dynasty of Bengal.

Cathedral Church of Redemption, Delhi

The foundation stone of the Cathedral Church of Redemption, Delhi was laid in 1927 by Lord Irwin. This Cathedral Church was designed by Henry Medd. On 15th Feb’1931, it was consecrated by the Bishop of Lahore. The church is built on a cross plan with the entry on the west and altar to the east. In 1935, the construction was completed.

These are few of the pics I took in last July when I was there in my home town. The sunset over Huglee River is the moment which I always enjoy.... Huglee River or Hooghly River (also known as Bhagirathi-Hooghly River) is the only river providing water to cities like Kolkata. There are so many reasons for liking this river and the piece of land. But I like Huglee as she along with clouds every day pay a colorful homage to The Sun. It is really a lovely moment to standstill and watch.

Badartala is a small area very near to Matiabruz, Kolkata.

Trams are one of so many old friends of Kolkata. In 1873 (24th Feb 1873)Kolkata got her first horse drown tram.

After lots of modification in 1902, (27th March1902), the first electric tramcar ran from Esplanade to Kidderpore.

Since then Tram has become a part of daily life of kolkata wallas'.
Behala Tram depot is operating since 1986. Tram used to be very popular mode of tranport for commuting to and from several parts of Behala , but recently the trend has seen a reversal. The only tram service in Behala now connects Behala to Thakurpukur and Joka.

I took the above photos in an evening july 2009, when I was just passing the depot. The tram shown in picture is the oldest version available in Kolkata.

Recently we have witnessed new sexy version of trams with sate of art design and better availability. Now it has become a MUST RIDE in Kolkata! :)

Kolata Tram is the oldest oprating electric driven tarm in ASIA!
On 22nd December, 1880, The Calcutta Tramway Co. Ltd was formed and registered in London!
In 1908 Behala got connected in Tram network!
In 1951, The Government of West Bengal signed an agreement with the Calcutta Tramways Company and the Calcutta Tramways Act, 1951 was enacted. The Govt. took control over all rights with regard to Tramways and reserved the right to purchase the system on 1st Jan, 1972 or any time thereafter giving two years notice.
In 1986 Behala got her own tram depot!

Peahen & Peacock: Chasing a couple!!!

It was an afternoon of a sun day and as usual I was killing time with my online friends and couple of glodflakes. Pre-monsoon breeze was trying to sooth the sunburn of Delhi NCR region. Suddenly, I heard the sound of peacock! It was loud and sharp...being sure that it is coming from very near, I came out of my room and found a couple in the roof of the next building! There was one male with a female walking here and there slowly on the roof.

Soon, I came with my camera and found the female one is still there in the roof. She was roaming absentmindedly as I was trying to capture her.

I was totally lost with the beauty she had! Feathers of her blue neck was sparkling in sunlight...She gave me enough time to press the shutter for few times before she went inside a neem tree.

Then I started looking for the male one. Strange! Where is he? In general a peacock don't let their mate go far alone during monsoon...Then where is he? I walked down in the street looking for him...

Finally I found him sitting on a roof of another house nearby!But it was out of the range of my camera.

After waiting some time with the hope that he would be kind to come closer to me, I realized that he has no such intention. So, I tried to get in the roof of another house to had a closer view...It was very funny when I found the house owner perplexed with our Hide & Seek game.

But, luck was not in mood to be pleased with me...when I managed to reach the roof top I found him sitting near the same neem tree which is just next to my room and where I found the female one.

Without spending an extra second I reached to our balcony. Alas! there was none apart from the neem tree!
It was a nice chasing but I failed to get them together!

No! This post is not about the stone named Cat's Eye! Rather this one is about a real pair of cats' eye. In one evening, while returning from regular job hunt, I found her sitting near a window. As I was passing she gave a look at me with a great annoyance!
Oh My God! What a pair of burning eyes!

Alas! My camera was not focused properly and hurriedly I took the shot to grab her burning eye. By the time I re-focused and tried my 2nd shot she was off the stage....

Fire tricks of Delhi chanawalas' are very simple and natural....I found one chanawalla near Karol Bagh, Delhi. Here the Chanawala is trying to wax up the heat of the clay pot to serve warm fried chana to his customers...

As I have told you, the trick is very simple...

The chanawala has managed a small clay pot with some burning charcoal in it. The clay pot has a handle made of iron wire. If you notice carefully, the clay pot has some small holes at upper part of it for ventilation.

After placing some burning charcoal in the pot, chanawala puts small wood pieces to ensure continuous heat. Now, next step is very simple...using the wire handle place the fire pot inside the pile of fried chana.

Warm fried chana is very populer among commuters especially when they are returning home after a day long business in Delhi.

Next time you come across a chanawala, think before ignoring his warm chana with black salt!

[Chana=Chickpea. Chana is also known as chhola or chola in India. Chana is a part of reguler Indian diet and well apprised for its high protein and fiber content! ]

Today being a son of her, I wish all of we a happy, peaceful and lovely life. :)

Dacres Lane or Decers Lane? .....Itz simply Tiffin Gali!

If you want to know Kolkata better and test her delicious street foods, Dacres Lane (also known as Tiffin Gaali, decers lane, dacker lane etc.) is a must visit place for you . It is a very narrow and short lane with arrays for food stalls. Decers Lane is one of the populer lunch destination for working people of Kolkata.

Once Kolkata or Calcutta was the Capital of British India and since then the lane is serving lunch for babus. Most probably in 1773, the lane was named as 'Dacres Lane' after Mr. Philip Milner Dacres who was then collector of Calcutta and member of the business council. Gradually the name of the street has become Decers Lane and then Tiffin Gali!

Almost none of the reguler visitor knows the history of the lane....what they know is that the Decers Lane is destination of their quick but heavy, spicy but healthy(subject to your digestion power), sufficient but cheap lunch. Here you will get all the Chinese, Afgani, Western, North Indian, South Indian, veg, non-veg foods with a pinch of Bengali touch ;)..Never mind!

Ohh! One thing more!

We in Kolkata, never finish any meal without sweets. Likely in The Dacres Lane (or decers lane)you will find sweet vendors with their magic stuffs.

In single line Dacres Lane (or Decers lane or Tiffin Gali) is an old example of One Stop Food destination!

[Note: Decers Lane is there in the heart of Kolkata, West Bengal. It is a lane between Esplanade Row (East) and Waterloo Street. Peak hour is between 1pm to 2pm IST. I took the above shots around 2.30 pm and it was still crowded! Apart from small stalls hotels/motels are also there in the lane. You will not get beef or Pork items in any stall here.]

Jhau Gach: The Aussie in Indian Garden!

Jhau Gach or Jhau Gachh is very common shrub of India. Rarely we miss to have shot of our dear one standing in front of a Jhau Gach. Jhau gach is the bengali name of the shrub and I was really surprised to know that nobody care about its origin. When I asked others about the tree they simply replied "Itz just a jhau gach!"

The origin of the tree is Autralia, where it is know are oak or ironwood/beefwood. The name of the genus is Casuarina and there are more than 17 species in the family Casuarinaceae, almost all are native to Australasia.

In India they are known by different names in different parts, like Vilayati Saru in UP, Bihar, MP etc. ; chouk in Chennai and other southern part.

Well! no more gyan enjoy the beauty of the evergreen shrub and next time never forget to have a click in front of them!

He was standing on the roof of a hut and enjoying the sunlight. I found him very cool with outsider. Without any sign of xenophobia he gave a plenty of time to shoot.

The Qutub Minar is the world's tallest brick build minaret. The construction of the minar was started by India's first muslim ruler Qutub-Ud-In Aibak in the year of 1193. The minar was completed by Firuz Shah Tughlaq in 1386. Firuz Shah Tughlak took the credit to build the top most storey of the minnar.

The Qutub Minar is one of the best example of Indo-Islamic Architecture.

A must visit place for all...

Sheek Kebab Walla @ Meena Bazaar!

Sheek Kebab...A mixture of and spices thinly wrapped around a skewer and grilled, usually in a tandoor.Sheek Kebab or Sheek Kabab is famous for its taste and aroma. Todays micro oven and modern cooking style is gradually killing this taste from far Afgan. Today only a few traditional sheek kabab wallas (vendors) are vending the royal taste here and there...I found one of them in our very own Meena Bazaar, next to Jama Masjid...

It is not any high profile gem...itz just a jarkan stone in silver ring given by our family astrologer!
This jarkan stone have refractive index very near to diamond...thus it sparkle in similar way!According to hindu astrology it can enhance the creativity by supporting Venus as Diamond do. But the effectiveness of a Jarken stone is maximum 20% of a Diamond of same size. Jarkan is a cultured stone most probably introduced by western jem suppliers. The use of jarken stone in Indian astrology is very new and rare incident.

Well, I have little or no knowledge about jems and astrology...so it is better to enjoy the beauty of the stone and consult with an expert for more detail information about Jarkan Stone!

Parrot from other tropical and warm regions comes in different combination of many colours, but in case of Indian Parrots, they are generally in bright green colour and often with colourfull ring in neck.

Unknown flower deeply kissed by romantic moon! Suppose, the yellow flower represents Kishna (peetamber) then the white moon is surely Radha... and there is a melancholy saga of incomplete love!
